Important Tax Deadlines for Farmers and Fishers in 2024

Attention all farmers and fishers! Here’s a crucial piece of information regarding your 2023 federal income tax return: if you didn’t make estimated tax payments throughout the year, you have a special deadline to file and settle your dues.

Mark your calendars! The deadline to file your 2023 return and pay all taxes owed falls on Friday, March 1st, 2024. This special provision allows you to avoid any penalties associated with estimated taxes.

But wait, there’s more!

How can I pay my taxes?

The IRS offers several convenient options for making your tax payments. You can easily pay directly from your bank account using the IRS Online Account. Additionally, you can schedule payments in advance through IRS Direct Pay.

Who qualifies for this special deadline?

This deadline applies to any individual who classifies as a farmer or fisher and did not submit an estimated tax payment by January 16th, 2024. If you made a qualifying payment by this date, you can utilize the regular deadline of April 15th, 2024 to file and avoid penalties (April 17th for Maine and Massachusetts).

How do I know if I qualify as a farmer or fisher for tax purposes?

The IRS defines a farmer or fisher as anyone who obtained at least two-thirds of their gross income from these activities during either 2022 or 2023.

What about disaster-stricken areas?

If you reside in a designated disaster area, you may benefit from an automatic extension to file and pay your return. Currently, individuals and businesses in parts of Connecticut, Maine, Michigan, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and West Virginia have until June 17th, 2024 to file their 2023 returns. This extension is based on your address and doesn’t require any additional paperwork or communication with the IRS.

Need more time?

Even outside disaster areas, you can request an additional extension to file your tax return until October 15th, 2024. However, it’s crucial to remember that this extension only applies to filing, not paying, your taxes. Any outstanding balance after the April due date will still accrue interest penalties.
