Pennsylvania Proposes New CPA Licensure Pathway

Pennsylvania Proposes New CPA Licensure Pathway

📰 Industry Update | May 2025

In an effort to address the growing shortage of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) across the state, Pennsylvania lawmakers have introduced a new bill that could modernize how professionals enter the accounting field.

Senate Bill 719, sponsored by Senators Scott Hutchinson (R-Oil City) and Nick Pisciottano (D-Monroeville), introduces an alternative route to CPA licensure. Under this proposal, candidates with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, two years of verified professional experience, and a passing score on the CPA Exam would qualify without the current requirement of 150 college credit hours.

The bill also seeks to streamline interstate practice by allowing CPAs licensed in other states to work in Pennsylvania without seeking additional certification, as long as they meet nationally recognized education and exam standards.

This initiative reflects a broader effort to reduce entry barriers into the accounting profession while maintaining the integrity and competency standards expected of CPAs.
